THE PATTERN

The pattern of a life
is rarely visible
when it is being lived.

For much of his working life, Gottlieb C. Venter weighed information and made decisions. Looking back at his own life, however, offered no such clarity.

Across four countries, through ambition and migration, loss and estrangement, prayer and improbable convergence, events separated by years began to echo one another.

Was it providence? Meaning constructed from chance?

The mind's instinct to find order?

Or something that had been there all along?

FOR THE READER

What in your life only became visible when you looked back?

The Pattern begins with one life, but its questions are not confined to it.

What have you inherited? What have you carried? And what might you recognise now that you could not see while you were living it?

Six Conversations About a Life

A companion to The Pattern — six reflections on beginning, fracture, wilderness, seeing, return and remembering.

Receive the companion when it is released, along with occasional reflections and news of future books.

ABOUT GOTTLIEB

A life spent weighing evidence.

A book about what evidence could not explain.

For more than thirty years, Chris Venter built a career around decisions — in finance, business, transactions and leadership — where evidence mattered and conclusions had to withstand scrutiny.

But some of the most consequential events in his own life resisted that kind of analysis.

Born in South Africa and now living in Western Australia, he began looking back across a life shaped by migration, ambition, faith, failure, family, loss and unexpected convergence. Events that had seemed separate while they were happening began, in retrospect, to echo one another.

The Pattern grew from that recognition.

Writing as Gottlieb C. Venter, he now explores the same underlying question through reflective non-fiction and historical fiction:

What becomes visible when we stand far enough back to see what we could not see while we were living it?

The Keepers

Daniel and the Wisemen

Across five centuries, kingdoms rise and fall.
A promise is carried from one generation to the next.

Beginning with Daniel in Babylon, The Keepers follows those entrusted with preserving his writings and the reckoning hidden within them — through Persia, Greece and the turbulent centuries that follow, until a group of Magi look west and realise the time may have come.

A historical fiction series about what one generation receives, what it preserves, and what it leaves for those who come after.

What if the people carrying history forward could not yet see what it was becoming?
